Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. In her childhood, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford was intrigued by the acting profession during her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she wasn't a good fit. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, she already had her TV debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate gained recognition as a stand-up comedian and became part of her portfolio in 1996.
