Salma Hayek got her big breakthrough in Hollywood by playing a character in Robert Rodriguez's Desperado, eventually ascending to the pinnacle of the industry with her Academy Award-nominated turn in Frida. Hayek was also involved in TV work including as the executive producer of the hit series Ugly Betty. Salma Hayek Jimenez began her life on 2 September 1966. She was the daughter of a Spanish mother and a Lebanese Father, she was raised in a prestigious Catholic household. Growing up in a wealthy Catholic family, Hayek attended a convent school in Louisiana when she was 12 and lived together with an aunt Houston, Texas, during her teenage years. When she was in Mexico City she briefly attended the university but dropped out in order to pursue acting. The actress eventually became a star of Mexican television shows. Early Film roles Hayek wanted to perfect her English in Los Angeles and achieve Hollywood celebrity status. In 1991 she moved to the city. Following a series of small film roles, she was cast opposite Antonio Banderas as Desperado in 1995.
